The Winchester Psalter Miniature Cycle - Facsimile and Commentary
|
Description |
"On the most elementary level, the Winchester Psalter illustrations provide a cogent introduction to the stories of the Bible" (Haney). Each leaf relays Biblical events simply and efficiently so as to help the viewer understand. This was especially helpful for a people who were generally illiterate at the time.
It is thought that the Book of Psalms was made at the Winchester’s Old Minster, a church in Winchester, England ("Winchester Psalter"). The images were accompanied by written commentary in a bilingual format. "The Latin text of the Psalms and an accompanying translation in Anglo-Norman French are written in parallel columns on the page, so that the two could be read together" ("Winchester Psalter"). * * * Haney, Kristine E.
