Title
Liber Bestiarum
Description
This impressive recreation of the Liber Bestiarum exhibits interesting styles of manuscript illumination of the Gothic age. The book contains 135 miniatures which show a variety of animals, both real and fictional, in their natural habitats or interacting with humans. Some of the animals include eagles, bears, unicorns, phoenixes, and many more. The original text was commissioned by the knight Roger de Mohaut, whose coat of arms can be found in the miniature of the elephant. Bestiarums were not merely for the study of various animals but served a religious purpose as a way to admire God’s many creations (“Liber Bestiarum”).

The original text can be found in the Bodleian Library at the University of Oxford, which is among one of the oldest libraries in Europe and the second largest in England (“History of the Bodleian”).
