Incidents of Travel in Yucatan Vol I

According the the preface of the first volume, the intention of this two part survey of the Yucatan peninsula was "to make a more thorough exploration of the ruins" found there. The intentions of the author, John L. Stephens, then, are more academic than for the primary sake of personal gain or exploitation.

Stephens was well experienced in anthropological study, having published other books similar to this such as "Incidents of Travel in Egypt, Arabia Petraea, and the Holy Land," "Incidents of Travel in Central America," and others. His surveys of lands foreign to him were more palpable to a general English audience as he recounts his studies in a narrative structure.

Despite his academic intentions of neutrality, Stephens' language is ethnocentric at times in the way he refers to indigenous people he interacts with. Such biases are difficult to part with, but reflect the ever-present sentiments of colonial thought held in Western perspectives.
