An Introduction to the Old English History
|
Description |
This book was written by the revolutionary British historian Robert Brady, who helped shift the perception of English history from mythical to rational. The tradition of history-keeping in which Brady was raised held the belief that the origins of British history was "a statute whose making was 'beyond memory' [and] of greater authority than one whose beginnings were known" (Pocock). His work, contrarily, focused on removing myths as the only canon of history and rooting England in its factual past.
Such a shift is important in straying away from the belief of a divine mandate carried by a single nation, often inspiring them to imperialism. However, as history has shown, this did not stop England from doing just that. * * * Pocock, J. G. A. "IV. Robert Brady, 1627–1700. A Cambridge Historian of the Restoration."
