Description |
Valerius Maximus was a Roman historian who wrote "Nine Books of Memorable Deeds and Sayings" to portray examples of good morality and to act as a resource for rhetoricians. The stories "[draw] chiefly from Roman history, [including] extracts from the annals of other peoples, principally the Greeks" (“Valerius Maximus”).
This book was published by Robert Estienne I (Robertus Stephanus I), son of Henri Estienne I (Henricus Stephanus I), who established the first Estienne family printing press in Paris. Robert I would eventually move from Paris to Geneva to escape censorship and persecution from Catholics for his translations of the Bible which revealed Protestant sentiments. His son, Henri Estienne II would follow him to Geneva and carry on the family name there ("Robert I Estienne"). The Estienne family would come to make some of the most popular and influential books of their time. * * * “Robert I Estienne (1503-1559): Paris 1526-1550; Geneva 1551-1559.” Estiennes at the Edward Worth Library.
