Title
Platonis Opera Omnia II
Alternative Title
The Works of Plato II
Description
The complete works of Plato translated by Jean de Serres, with commentary. This compilation was the first of its kind and established a numerical system called the "Stephanus numbers" to reference Plato's work with ease (Reverdin). The numbers are named after a publishing family, the Estiennes (Stephanus), who created the system. Henri Estienne II, publisher of this book, took over the publishing house his father, Robert Estienne I, established in Geneva in 1550 due to persecution for his Protestant beliefs in Paris. "Henri Estienne [II] mastered Latin, Greek, and Italian and devoted a significant amount of work to translating, editing, publishing, and collating essential classical texts" (Shangler).

The collection consists of three volumes contained in these two books. Book II is divided between the first and second tome (volume 2 begins with the sixth book of the Republic). The composition of each volume is as follows:

Volume I: Euthyphro, Apology, Crito, Phaedo, Theages, Rival Lovers, Theaetetus, Sophist, Euthydemus, Protagoras, Hippias minor, Cratylus, Gorgias

Volume II: Philebus, Meno, Alcibiades, 2nd Alcibiades, Charmides, Laches, Lysis, Hipparchus, Menexenus, Statesman, Minos, Republic, Laws, Epinomis

Volume III: Timaeus, Critias, Parmenides, Symposium, Phaedrus, Hippias major, Letters, Axiochus, On Justice, On Virtue, Demodocus, Sisyphus, Eryxias, Clitophon, Definitions
("Plato and His Dialogue").
