Description |
Henri Estienne II, (Henricus Stephanus II), created this satirical work in response to "a perceived threat to the French language from outside," citing the "Italianized language of the court" (Hornsby). The work seeks to criticize the loss of French culture in the country and call for repatriation. Henri II experienced so much backlash for this book that he had make "a brief return to Paris to escape the wrath of the [Genevan] Council" ("Henri II Estienne").
Stephanus took over the French publishing institution his grandfather, Henri Estienne I, established. "Henri Estienne mastered Latin, Greek, and Italian and devoted a significant amount of work to translating, editing, publishing, and collating essential classical texts" (Shangler). * * * “Henri II Estienne (1528-98): Paris 1554; Geneva 1557-1598.” Estiennes at the Edward Worth Library.
