This book, printed by the Book Club of California, contains a single leaf from a first edition Coverdale Bible printed in 1535. The leaf contains Acts 13: 7-52 and Acts 13:1-26 (with the loss of a few words to the pages before and after the enclosed leaf).
The Coverdale Bible was significant in the history of the printing of Bibles because it was "the first time a complete printed English edition was available." The Wycliffe Bible had paved the way in the printing of the Word in English, but "its numbers and readers were comparatively few, and it was couched in what was by [then] a nearly obsolete diction." Therefore, a Bible with the present vernacular was needed. The printing of the Bible in a common vernacular was faced with much opposition from traditionalists in the Church. They believed it to be heretical to publish the Bible in anything but Latin. However, with the mentality of "the Renaissance and Reformation movements, the founding of Universities, and the... wide dissemination of books" due to the prevalence of printing, it was difficult to keep the common people back from creating a more accessible Bible ("A Leaf"). By placing the Bible into the hands of the common person and out of control of the rich Church hierarchy, people began a journey of personal spirituality where God and not the Church lead them towards salvation.
