The Bibles from which these leaves come represent a controversial history of the early American colonies and the United States. Believing their religion to be the salvation of the Native American people, many Christian colonizers of North America and surrounding areas sought to indoctrinate indigenous people with their customs. Despite any well-meaning, this era of Native American/indigenous history is marked with terrible violence and death as the invading white man began to restrict indigenous culture, cut off natural resources, steal their land, and kill their families through sickness and physical force. While indigenous culture still persists despite this history, sometimes with an interesting synthesis of Christianity, the scars of the injustices faced by First Nations are still seen today.
